An Aphorism

Every now and then I'm reminded of a principle I learned as a young musician that is equally appropriate and reliable whether you are talking about playing a trumpet, strumming a guitar, or preparing to speak:

Sometimes,
the best thing you can contribute
is
silence.

In the Japanese culture, this is called mokusatsu, and is an important technique in the business world. (Basically, if to speak would be detrimental, do not speak.)

By the way, I happened across your blog while exploring other Adrian Belew fans on Blogger. He is brilliant.

I was listening to NPR yesterday and they were talking about a trumpet play from New Orleans who is coming out with a cd. He was asked by someone other than NPR, if he had music in his head after Katrina. and he said "sometimes all you hear is silence" and it reminded me of this blog.
